CHAPTER 10

Jasper gazed at Carrie, and all he could feel was rage. Rage because she was working so hard to clean the house of cobwebs, setting traps for the mice, and making a list of what they needed to purchase in town.

All his preconceived notions about the duchess were not coming true. If she were acting like he thought she would, she would have demanded servants. She would have refused to clean their home. She would not be so damn good in bed that when he glanced at her, he wanted to bend her over the nearest table and take her right then and there.

Last night, they had a perfect wedding night with her being compliant even when he tried to push her too far. Everything was going along so well and that made him even madder.

She wasn’t acting like the Carrie he expected. She wasn’t being a snobby little rich girl who had never cleaned or had to work for a living. She was being the perfect wife for him and Levi and that enraged Jasper.

He wanted to hate her. He wanted to look at Levi and say I told you so, but instead, she was doing everything they asked. Now, she reminded him of the young girl that had been his friend until she betrayed him.

He wanted to push her away and send her screaming from the pain he inflicted on her. He wanted to see her run out of the house crying straight into the arms of her overprotective brothers, but so far, she had done everything he’d asked of her. Everything.

Damn!

What else could he do to get under her skin?

“Carrie,” he told her as he tried to repair the broken sink in the kitchen. The metal tub was rusted, and as much as he pumped the well, water had not come out.

“Go clean the root cellar,” he said. “Take the lantern with you and watch out for mice and snakes.”

She licked her lips and grabbed her bucket of soapy water. Lifting the door in the floor, she glanced inside. Then she descended the steps with the light shining ahead.

A grin spread across his face. If that didn’t scare her, nothing would.

Shaking her head and mumbling to herself, she came back up the stairs and took down her bucket of clean, soapy water.

A moment later, she came back up and grabbed a shovel from in the barn and carried it back down with her.

“Take that,” he heard her say. “Get out of here.”

After several more thunks, it grew quiet.

Levi came around the corner. “Where’s Carrie?”

“In the root cellar,” he said, grinning, knowing this would be what sent her fleeing. Then he would bring her back and punish her.

The man shook his head at him. “You’re going to make her hate you. Is that what you want? I don’t know what happened between the two of you, but you better get it resolved quick or else you’re going to jeopardize everything.”

Levi hurried down the stairs. Jasper heard them talking and he could hear Levi soothing her.
